As little kids we all used lanyards and to this day lanyards are used as ID strap or a neck strap. It is mainly designed to hang small objects around the neck. It is specially used to hang spectacles around the neck. Most often than not people have a habit of forgetting things around and if it is attached to a lanyard small objects can be easily carried on them. It is most commonly used in schools and organizations to carry the badges. These badges are given for identification and hence have to be worn around the necks at all time when at the institution.

 

Lanyards have been in use since a long time and its use can be dated back to the fifteenth century. I Lanyards: Accessory which is necessary and useful in fact the very word finds it origin from the Latin word "laniere" which means a strap. These lanyards were initially were used by the sailors on the ships to tighten or lash the rigging. However, the use of lanyards was not restricted only to that, even sailors used lanyards to carry small objects like whistles, knives and even pistols while on board. The ultimate purpose of the lanyard was to ensure that object remained in sight at all times. This was specially made for the time when one felt the risk of losing it.

 

Further on the lanyard was used to fire a piece of artillery. It was used as a length of a wire or chord which had a hook to which the piece of artillery was attached. It acted like the fuse mechanism on a bomb which required pulling of the cotter pin. The lanyards were also used membership card by the officers of the cavalry and naval unit. Later lanyards were made which could be easily attached and removed off while the pistol still stayed in the holster.

 

However over the years lanyards became more decorative with various color combination and different braid patterns. There are different lanyards used by the military personnel. This is mainly to denote the rank or the regiment or the group of the wearer.

 

Lanyards now come with a number of accessory clips. The most popular are the clips like dog clips, mobile phone holders and the crocodile clips. These lanyards are extremely popular and seen with people attending conferences since they are needed to carry the registration badges. There are a lot of women who now use beaded lanyards.

 

These beaded lanyards don't just give a different look but also make the lanyard a fashionable accessory. These beads are made of metallic beads, semi precious stones, gems and a variety of materials. What makes lanyards even more popular is that they are not very expensive and gives a more feminine look when they are beaded. Thus women don't mind using such lanyards since they look just like a beaded necklace.

 

All in all the lanyards are useful as well as a fashionable accessory and companies and organizations can also get custom made lanyards which are designed specially for a particular institution.
